Through school, college, university and at work, it has been the norm to learn within a community of others on the same journey. More people in a group means more questions get asked and more interactive behaviour is possible. Social interaction deepens learning. Whilst these institutions have been turned upside down in the pandemic, Ketso’s methodology and principles mean it is still possible to forge that sense of a learning community, even if individuals are physically separated.
Bringing people together to explore ideas has always been a strong reason to use Ketso products. Our aim has consistently been to make sure everyone has their voice heard, and community building is championed over a passive, ‘listening to one voice’ approach. When a single person is the only voice heard in a group, so much, in terms of ideas, thoughts, exploration of the subject, can potentially be sidelined or lost altogether.
Making online interaction more stimulating
A key innovation of Ketso Connect, is to provide a way to help hear everyone’s voice in group online discussions. If you want to make sure that everyone has a go, it is important to have a turn-taking process. Ketso Connect gives a prompt for this turn-taking. For example, in breakout groups, one student can be given the role of going around the circle to make sure everybody has a say, and all participants will be aware that everyone in the group has developed some ideas on their Ketso felt, and chosen one to share.
It can be very intimidating for a student to be called on to speak in any setting, and this can be amplified online with the pressure of feeling that the ‘camera’ and spotlight are on you.
Ketso Connect used in conjunction with online learning makes lectures, research and working together a more involved, more engaging and more rewarding student experience and creates a learning community, rather than a group merely learning together.
Crucially with Ketso Connect, students are given a chance to develop their ideas offline, so that they feel more confident in sharing an idea when it comes to their turn. The kit helps students to structure and order their thinking. This gives everybody time and space to think. With online lectures this breaks up the session into easier ‘bite sizes’, as opposed to a long period of needing to listen intently through a computer. Sole reliance on computers as a medium for lectures makes it hard to maintain concentration levels for many students.
Using Ketso Connect in online and blended learning with a student community brings structure to the group interaction, in a way that allows the students to stop and think, share ideas, organise and take away the knowledge, insights and intelligence from the session.
Knowing how isolated many students are likely to feel in the coming months of uncertainty, our intention with Ketso Connect is to encourage the development of student learning communities. Simply supplying each member of a cohort with a personal kit gives a way to bring focus and structure to learning, and it creates a bond that would not be there otherwise.
Promoting inclusivity and engagement
We have always been proponents of the idea that teaching that embeds a range of learning strategies is more likely to work for a higher proportion of students. Multi-sensory learning increases inclusivity and engagement. A Ketso kit is something that makes you use your hands, commit to writing succinct notes on the leaves, and move ideas around to create clusters and structure in a way that grows the learning visually. Ketso Connect used in conjunction with online learning makes lectures, research and working together a more involved, more engaging and more rewarding student experience and creates a learning community, rather than a group merely learning together.
We are very proud of what we have achieved with the Ketso Connect. We want to help make the learning journeys of students memorable for the right reasons in 2020 and beyond, despite the continued constraints and challenges of the environment.
